Custer State Park in the Black Hills encompasses 71,000 acres of spectacular terrain and an abundance of wildlife.
Favorite outdoor activities include hiking 7,242-foot Harney Peak, mountain biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, fishing, chuckwagon suppers and jeep rides to see the bison.
Crazy Horse Memorial, the world’s largest sculpture, now in progress, is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota on US Highway 16/385 just 17 miles southwest of Mount Rushmore.
The Memorial includes the Indian Museum of North America, the Native American Cultural Center which was dedicated at the 1996 Native American Day celebration, the sculptor’s studio, as well as a new 40,000-square-foot Orientation Center and theaters opened in May 2000.

At Cleghorn Springs near Rapid City, South Dakota, the Game, Fish and Parks Department raises trout and salmon which are stocked in the state’s fishing waters. Rainbow trout and Chinook salmon are the major species raised. Five hundred thousand fish, totaling 90,000 pounds, are produced annually.
Nestled on 58 acres in the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota near Rapid City, is the Circle B Ranch Chuckwagon - a Black Hills tradition since 1976.
Stroll along the wooden sidewalks of the Old West town, browse in the Wild Horse Gift Shop, sip a cold sarsaparilla in the Buffalo Room Soda Fountain, or watch the world-class woodcarver, Doug Ladd, shape one of his creations. The Badlands area’s foremost geological attraction since 1956. The Badlands Petrified Gardens, is located in Kadoka, South Dakota.
The Petrified Gardens offer a yardful of petrified wood, displays of minerals which fluoresce under ultraviolet light, and a museum containing both fossilized fishes and fossilized feces (coprolites).
The Big Thunder Gold Mine was once a real, operating gold mine during Keystone’s heyday as a gold mining camp. Big Thunder Mine today is the only gold mine in the Keystone area that’s open for tours.
Visitors get a free sample of gold ore during the underground tour and have a chance to pan in a real placer deposit along Battle Creek.
