High Plains Western Heritage Center – Spearfish, South Dakota

This unique museum doesn’t just showcase South Dakota but a 5-State Region honoring the Old West Pioneers and Native Americans of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Whyoming and Nebraska.  Come in and see all the artifacts, learn of the history and become aware of the stuggles that the early pioneers faced while opening up the country.

The areas that were chosen for the museum are agriculture, mining, transportaion, logging and Native American Lore.  The facility was opened in 1989 and has been open continuously since then.

When you arrive at the Heritage Center you will see live Buffalo and Longhorn Steers in the front pastureland.   Inside you will be able to see the original Spearfish to Deadwood stagecoach, a turn of the century kitchen, chuckwagon, “Tally Ho” wagon, buggies and sleighs.  On the 40 acre site outside you will be able to visit a furnished One-Room schoolhouse, furnished log homestead cabin and see antique farm equipment.

There are displays that showcase the Native Americans, cattle and sheep industry, blacksmithing, saddle making, natural hisotry, mining, forestry along with the cowboy and rodeo displays.  There is a small animal farm open during the summer months for the kids to enjoy.

“Historical Campfire Series” and live monthly Cowboy Music & Poetry performances are offered throughout the year.
