There may be no better place than the Wounded Knee Museum for a realistic understanding of what the Native Americans faced during their struggles with the United States during the late 1800s. At this museum, you’ll follow the story of the Lakota people through the fateful Wounded Knee massacre on December 29, 1890.

What Will My Experience Be Like When I Go?

This is a narrative museum, which means that the exhibits follow a path through the story of the Wounded Knee massacre. Visitors will be able to learn about a large number of topics related to the massacre through text, pictures, graphics, a model of the massacre site, and a special Remembrance Room honoring the victims of Wounded Knee. There are over two dozen exhibits covering everything from pre-Columbian America to current issues like the use of Indian mascots for sports teams in addition to an in-depth study of the Wounded Knee massacre itself.

    Of all the times I have been back and forth from Nebraska, to The Black Hills (and that incudes through Wall) I have never known about this place! It will be on our list of stops next time!

    I visited the Wounded Knee Museum, Wall, S.D. several times in the fall of 2006. I am still impressed, 2 years later, at the quality of the exhibits.
    I reccommend this museum to everyone who visits Wall. Stop for 15 minutes, or for 2 hours . . . . it will be worth it !

    The museum has “Open seasonally to October 12 on their site with the hours being 8:30 am – 5:30 pm daily. You can call ahead to see if they are going to be open by callin 970-226-3218.

    A great story of what happened to the Native peoples not just at wounded Knee but over the hundresd of years of treaties broken and land taken. Sad, but true.
