sturgissouthdakota_1.jpgCavalry Days - Sturgis, South Dakota - Cavalry Days celebrates the history of Fort Meade, back in the days when it was a frontier cavalry post. Fort Meade was established in 1878 and was home to the 7th Cavalry, which for a time, was led by General George Armstrong Custer.

The celebration is held in early June with the opening ceremony is set for 3:00 p.m on Friday, at the corner of First and Main Streets. 2:00-4:00 p.m. There is an ice cream social at Northern Hills Federal Credit Union located at 1080 Main Street, Sturgis. Reenactors will rob the historic bank building at the corner of First and Main Streets at 4:00 p.m. A Cowboy Stew Cook-off will be located downtown followed by the Court Marshall of General George Armstrong Custer to be held at the Sturgis Community Center Theater.

Saturday events get underway with tours at the Fort Meade Museum and Poker Alice House. The Art Show and Vintage Fashion Show will be held in town on Saturday. Step back in time with the most fashionable outfits of "The Day". Narrated tours of Fort Meade will be provided. There will be activities at the Barry Stadium, including Blacksmith demonstrations, Native American Living History Encampment, children’s games and buildings sat up as a mock frontier town.

Join in with the Pony Express Competition, Annie Tallent Pie Baking Contest, the Quick Draw Competition.
