Porter Sculpture Park, Montrose, South Dakota

Porter Sculpture Park.jpgPorter Sculpture Park, Montrose, South Dakota

Whimsical, fun and thought provoking, Porter Sculpture Park is one man’s vision of the world around him. Created by welding and working from a great imagination, this park outside of Sioux Falls features over 50 giant metal creatures in the best folk art tradition.

From the giant pink rocking horse to the Magic Dragon, from the supersized hand with a butterfly to the dinosaur smelling the roses, your imagination will be sparked. Lots of great photo opportunities, lots of wonder and amusement…a fun departure from normal art galleries and museums.

Everybody’s favorite is the 60-foot tall longhorn (that’s the same height as the heads on Mount Rushmore.  Made of 8-inch square steel plates from abandoned railroad tracks, the bull weighs 25 tons.

My afternoon spent viewing Wayne Porter’s sculptures and talking with him remains one of the most enjoyable parts of my recent 15,000 mile tour around the USA. Thanks, Wayne.
