Verendrye Museum - Fort Pierre, South Dakota
Built in 1933 this building was converted to the museum and was originally the Legion Community Hall.
Named for the first Europeans to visit South Dakota The museum houses pioneer relics and a reproduction of the lead tablet brothers Chevalier and Louis la Verendrye buried in a bluff above the Missouri River, thereby claiming for France the territory that eventually became the Louisiana Purchase.
The Verendrye Museum is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm during the tourist season of Memorial Day through Labor Day. If you’re in Fort Pierre in the off season you can see some museum displays at the Fort Pierre Log Cabin Information center located at 04 E.
